Topic: The way of the Earth Work: Plate Tectonic of the Dom. Rep
Obtain from the internet and/or library two recent intelligent articles on the topic. Do not use popular magazines, newspapers, or children’s books. “Wikipedia” like materials cannot be used or cited but can be used to find other sources. You may use any sources suggested in the text and I can help you with suggestions too so just e-mail me.
Write a 3-1/2 to 4 page double spaced typewritten essay on the topic (don’t count title or citation pages). You must use the outline below EXACTLY AS IT IS SHOWN. This means I have to see the 6 topic headings written out exactly as shown when I read your essay. An example is attached (use for format only – it is much too short!). Pictures and graphs are encouraged but not included in page count!
Failure to use the outline exactly as shown – 5 points penalties. Failure to provide the text pages in section II- 3 points (out of 25) taken off.
Failure to attach copies of both articles – paper gets handed back on the spot and not accepted until the articles are attached.
OUTLINE:
Objective – what you are trying to achieve with this paper (largely a comparison between the textbook and the article, concluding with your own opinion). I want to see more detail than 1-2 sentences here!
What the textbook has to say about the subject You must make note of the pages in the textbook so I can review the material.
What the first article has to say about the subject You must attach a copy of the article so I can review the material. If you get it off the internet, you must provide the “address” as well.
What the second article has to say about the subject Compare the articles and the textbook How do they agree? How do they differ? Perhaps the articles are the result of research and findings done after the textbook was printed. If so, please make a note of it.
Conclusion So what? What did you get out of this exercise? Did it give you any better appreciation for the course itself? Is there any broader application of this than meets the eye? What do you think? What’s your opinion? You should have one by now!

Exploring Active Tectonics in the Dominican Republic
The devastating 12 January 2010 Haiti
earthquake (M = 7.0), which killed an estimated 230,000 people and caused extensive
damage to homes and buildings, drew attention to the crucial need for improved knowledge of the active tectonics of the Caribbean region. But even before this disastrous event, interest in understanding the active and complex northeastern Caribbean plate boundary had been increasing, because this region has experienced significant seismic activity during the past century and has an
extensively documented record of historical seismicity and tsunamis. Moreover, this is an easily accessible region in which to study
the continuity of seismic faults offshore and to try to understand the transitions between strike- slip and convergent tectonic regimes.
Interest in the region has led to several studies that have improved scientists’ knowledge of subduction zone tectonics and earthquake and tsunami hazard assessments [Mann et al., 2002; ten Brink et al., 2006, 2009; Grindlay et al., 2005; Manaker et al.,
2008; Granja Bruña et al., 2009; Mondziel et al., 2010].
