Write a 3-5 page response paper in which you consider the following questions and materials.
Purpose: Now that you have a research topic, the purpose of this paper is to discuss the impact of your chosen artifact and its technology on society. This will include a consideration of the ethics of this technology in relation to social needs, social goods, and potential social harms.
Description: Use the artifact and its related technology which you have chosen for your research project (or, if you prefer, you may find a current event in the news that involves issues of social need and the use of technology as a “technological fix” for that social need or problem).
Research the impact of this artifact/technology on society (you could, quite literally, begin with an online search for “impact of XXX on society” to start finding ideas and issues related to your technology).
How has the technology and its artifact(s) been used to satisfy a social need or solve a social problem? How is the technology used or proposed as a way to satisfy a social need or solve a social issue or problem? Does this “technological fix” save time? Money? Expand humans’ ability to do something? Is/was this an effective solution, or are there social solutions that might be more effective (even if they cost more in time and/or money)?
Is the general public consensus that the technological solution works or fails to work? Do you agree or disagree with this conclusion? Be sure to address which ethical standard(s) you are using to make a judgment about the effectiveness of this technological solution (refer to the Markkula Center reading on ethics).
